How could Prophet Muhammad ﷺ have told us about it more than 1,400 years ago?

“Or [they are] like darknesses within an unfathomable sea which is covered by waves, upon which are waves, over which are clouds — darknesses, some of them upon others. When one puts out his hand [therein], he can hardly see it. And he to whom Allah has not granted light — for him there is no light.”

Tafsir

The scientific-miracle reading

(1904).He reads the “deep sea” as a sea whose water separates into masses of different temperature and salinity. Along the boundary between them form internal waves, which can reach about 200 m. So “waves, upon which are waves” means an internal wave in the deep with the surface wave above it, and clouds above both: darknesses stacked on darknesses. Science, he notes, only came to know these waves at the start of the 20th century (1904).

A professor of marine geology who taught at King Abdulaziz University in Jeddah, he supports the same reading: scientists only confirmed the darkness of the deep with modern instruments, and no one could dive that deep unaided. He is quoted as saying the information “must have come from a supernatural source”.

His words come from filmed interviews in the scientific-miracles project presented by Sheikh Abdul Majeed al-Zindani; we found no published paper by him on the subject.

Classical tafsir

The verse is the second of two parables about the deeds of those who reject faith (24:39–40): first a mirage, then darkness in a deep sea.

الطبريal-Tabarid. 310 AH

A deep sea “with much water”: a wave covers it, another wave above, then cloud. Symbolically, the darknesses are the deeds and the sea is the human heart.

القرطبيal-Qurtubid. 671 AH

A stormy sea at night, where cloud hides the stars sailors steer by.

Ibn Kathird. 774 AH

He could not even come close to seeing it, so intense was the dark: a parable for the blind follower who does not know where he is going.

The opposing view and the reply
Objection

The verse is a parable about disbelief, not a lesson in oceanography.

الردReply

A parable is true in its image as well as its meaning; the precision of the image is part of its eloquence.

Objection

Classical scholars read the waves as surface waves on a stormy sea at night, not waves beneath the surface.

الردReply

The text can hold meanings that become clearer as knowledge grows, without cancelling earlier readings.

Objection

Sailors knew “dead water” (Nansen, 1893), and pearl divers working at 7–30 m knew light fades with depth.

الردReply

They knew the effects, not the cause, and never reached the total darkness of the deep.
